Hip and Joint Health

Hip and Joint Health

One of the most common ailments that affects our pets as they age is degenerative joint disease, which includes arthritis. It can occur secondary to normal wear and tear on the joints, as well as trauma and infections, but the end result is the same. The cartilage which helps cushion the joint wears down and causes pain as the ends of the bones rub against each other.

Have you noticed your pet walking stiffly or having a little trouble getting up? Don’t despair! There are plenty of options to help ease the pain and increase mobility. In fact, there are many commercially available (OTC) supplements used to treat joint damage or disease; some  of these have fewer side effects than drugs, and you can decide (with your vet) what’s right for your dog or cat’s situation.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin

A major component of these supplements is glucosamine, which you'll usually find in conjunction with chondroitin. While we don't know exactly how glucosamine provides its beneficial effects, it appears to help the cartilage rebuild itself and act as a natural anti-inflammatory. Some studies have shown it to be on par with the benefits from prescription pain medications. In addition, the chondroitin component helps keep cartilage supple by helping it retain water.

We carry a variety of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements, including Glycoflex and Cosequin. Your pet might have a preference between hard or soft chews, so come explore our variety! We also offer treats that provide hip and joint benefits by having these components added into them. (See Hip & Joint Treats)

Other Supplements for Your Pet

MSM is another component of supplements that can be really beneficial for dogs with joint disease. A natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, it can help naturally treat pets with arthritis pain. As an added bonus, it helps maintain normal keratin levels in hair and skin, keeping your dog healthier overall.

Boswellia may also benefit your pup. It comes from the Boswellia plant and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. Some studies have shown it to be even more effective than using pharmaceutical medications alone, and side effects of Boswellia are pretty rare. Plenty of products on the market have Boswellia, such as NaturVet's ArthriSoothe and some versions of Cosequin.

What About CBD, Herbal Remedies, or Acupuncture?

While you're reading this, you might be wondering about CBD products and their possible benefits for your furry family member. CBD works on the endocannabinoid system and has many beneficial effects. These benefits include decreasing anxiety and acting as a pain reliever. Since many older pets suffer from separation anxiety that is only made worse by their discomfort from arthritis, CBD oil and treats may be just what the doctor ordered. You can find it in products such as Stella & Chewy Hemp Dog Treats*.

Acupuncture may also have beneficial results for animals suffering from arthritis. There are several acupuncture practitioners in our area. Hear what Dr. Brozman, DVM has to say about the benefits of acupuncture.
