Hurricane Survival Kits
Here in Florida, we know it's just a matter of time before the arrival of the next thunderstorm (or worse!). Our pets are much more sensitive than we are to signs that a storm is coming. They can sense barometric pressure changes, feel static electricity in the air, hear the low-frequency sounds of distant thunder before we can, and smell when rain is on the way. Many pets get extremely agitated by these signs, and once they're stressed out, it's difficult to calm them down!
By planning ahead and having the proper items ready, we can keep storm anxiety to a minimum:
Synthetic pheromones, available via sprays, plug-ins, or wearable collars, can help ease stress by mimicking the natural scent a lactating mother dog produces when feeding her puppies.
Melatonin, valerian, tryptophan, and other natural ingredients can have a sedative effect that reduces anxiety symptoms in dogs.
